Jesse Yancy Memorial Library, in partnership with the Mississippi Center for the Book, will be conducting a Book Club featuring Kathryn Stockett's The Help. All ages are invited!

Starting in January, participants will read The Help and then meet at the library for snacks and discussion in late February (date and time to be determined).

Emily Sutherland, Lee Cruthirds Glass, and Vickie Sutherland of the Jesse Yancy Memorial Library in Bruce, hosted the Dixie Regional Library System Training Class and Christmas Party on Dec. 13. The Dixie Regional Staff, along with most of the Librarians in the System and some Board Members were present. There was lots of good food, lots of presents and a lot of fun too. Christmas Float Wins First Place In Parade

Congratulations to Rose Diamond and the EXCEL kids. Their float, on behalf of the Calhoun City Library and EXCEL "Preparing for Santa" won first place in the Calhoun City Christmas Parade.

Rose explained, "EXCEL is a non-profit after-school tutoring program that has benefited the families of Calhoun County for 17 years. Sister Myra and Sister Judy (assisted by Liza Mays) provide these children with plenty of reading opportunities."

Some ladies from the Tri-Community Homemakers Club supported and provided refreshments for the youngsters. Recently a couple of us (I think) at Dixie Regional signed up for an online continuing education activity called "23 Things for Professional Development." My goal in doing so was to learn more about new technology and ways it can be used to promote our library system. Also, I thought it might encourage me to do more professional reading in which I am woefully negligent.

So, here I am doing the "1st Thing." Trying to write a blog post. Typically the blog posts here have centered around activities/events going on through out the library system. Perhaps as a result of CPD23 more diverse posts will be created.

Dear Editor,
What would your community be like without a public library? It sounds a little melodramatic, but just consider what would be lost - - a major public service that offers free computer and Wireless access, reference assistance, fax and copy machines, early literacy programs, family game and movie night, Lunching with Books and Lagniappe programs, a meeting room, and, of course, books, audios, DVDs, etc. for both education and recreation.

Even if you don’t personally use the library, you probably know some of the over 300 people a day who do – that’s 106,000 visits to the Pontotoc Library in the past year.

It is no secret that tax revenues have been low – this directly affects the public funding that we receive from both the State of Mississippi and local authorities. We hesitate to admit that the local library needs a community fundraising effort. We’ve done such a good job of ‘making do’ that we have managed to keep most people from even realizing that we are having trouble making ends meet. The time has come when we have cut all that we can cut; more library services will suffer if we have to make further reductions.

Regular customers may have noticed:
Fewer staff – two positions have been cut – means longer lines to get help or check out.
More people – especially computer users, who search and apply for jobs, take online classes, or use the library as an office.
Less comfort – some have asked, why is it so hot, and, do we have to use that loud fan?
And - Where are the new books? - The book budget is gone - we will depend on donations and fundraisers this year.

“What can one person do?”
1. Become an advocate - Join the Friends of Pontotoc County Library – come to a planning meeting after Lunching with Books this Thursday, September 9.
2. Let your aldermen and supervisors know how much this home town library means to you.
3. Consider a tax-deductible donation, no matter how small, to the Friends of the Pontotoc County Library.

We ask your support as we plan for the well-being of the Library and our community.

Friends of the Library Group organize at Edmondson Memorial Library

The Friends of the Edmondson Memorial Library in Vardaman met for their first regular meeting on Friday, February 12. The group is planning it's first fundraiser which will be a plant sale in May. Young members will paint and decorate containers to be used in the plant sale. Little green thumbs can watch a movie in the library while adult green thumbs browse and take part in a Plant Walk, which is similar to a cake walk.

Book Description - Call Me Gullah presents a vivid description of a unique group within the African American culture. The Gullah living on Sea Coast Islands bordering South Carolina and Georgia have the purest bloodline of African slaves ever brought to America in wooden ships. The author suggests that some 75% of Blacks living in the United States remain unaware of the one of a kind group. Sons of former slaves have left a dialect, culture, and cuisine that have a direct link to their West African heritage.

About the Author - R. H. Brown is a Television Reporter for a local CBS Affiliate in Columbus, Mississippi. This veteran Vietnam Era Army Medic is also a veteran Radio Announcer. Brown grew up Gullah on St. Helena Island, South Carolina. He has been living in Mississippi for the last 19 years with his wife Bettye and two sons Dameion and Adrian. R. H. Brown enjoys being seen, as well as heard. WCBI TV and Living Manna Church of West Point, MS, where Brown has pastored a flock since 1993 give him that avenue.

Consider becoming a member of the Friends of the Pontotoc County Library. The Friends of the Library is a not-for-profit organization for people interested in books and libraries. The purpose is to stimulate public interest in the library, purchase library materials, and support other cultural and educational programs in Pontotoc County.

Membership includes people who wish to support reading in our communities. Some are active in the booksale, working during the year to sort the community donations, volunteering during the sale, or at various other programs. Many do not have the time or inclination, or are otherwise unable to participate physically. All are an important part of our mission.

If you are interested in joining the Friends of the Library, either as a silent supporter or an active participant in our varied activities applications are available at the library. Dues for an individual are only $5.00 a year.

Money is used to purchase books for the library, to replace worn out equipment, and to provide quality educational programs for Pontotoc County Residents of all ages.

The Friends of the Pontotoc County Library enjoyed the Christmas Parade by selling hotdogs, chips, brownies and water to raise money for books for the library for Christmas. The community’s support was greatly appreciated.

Wednesday, December 23^rd @ 10, we will be showing a movie for storytime. The movie will be The Year Without a Santa Claus. Mrs. Claus tells us about the time Santa had a bad cold and decided to take a vacation from Christmas. The story is based on Phyllis McGinley’s book illustrated by Kurt Werth. The Friends of the Library will serve refreshments. Children are welcome to bring a quilt, pillow or sleeping bag so they will be comfortable for the movie.

Tuesday, December 29^th @ 6 o’clock we will be showing the movie – Night at the Museum, Battle of the Smithsonian, which is rated PG.

Wednesday, December 30^th @ 10, we will be showing Knut and Friends, You’ll fall in love with Knut, the world’s most famous polar bear, in this true-life story of the adorable cub who overcame overwhelming odds to survive.

Recommended reading for the Christmas Holidays: No Less than Victory by Jeff Shaara, U is for Undertow by Sue Grafton, The Sound of Sleigh Bells by Cindy Woodsmall, Christmas List by Richard Paul Evans, or A Cousin’s Prayer by Wanda Brunstetter. These are all new additions to our collection.

The Library will be closed Tuesday – December 22, Thursday December 24 – December 26^th, December 31 – January 2.

Civil War Historian

Dr. Brandon H. Beck
presents his latest book

The Battle of Okolona: Defending the Mississippi Prairie

Dr. Beck is the author of nine books on various aspects of the War Between the States. Dr. Beck retired to Columbus, Mississippi, after 38 years of teaching, including a 23-year tenure at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia, where he founded the McCormick Civil War Institute. He remains its Director Emeritus.

The longtime educator will discuss his latest book, The Battle of Okolona: Defending the Mississippi Prairie, published by The History Press in Charleston, South Carolina. The book was originally due to be released on February 22, 2010, the 146th anniversary of the clash, but has been released early. The Battle of Okolona is the first Civil War book Beck has penned about action outside of Virginia, his former home state. Citing the benefit of local resources, the author noted, “I couldn’t have written this book without the help of the Friends of the Battle of Okolona and the libraries in Aberdeen, Columbus, Okolona, Pontotoc, Starkville, and West Point.” Dr. Beck, who currently teaches at Mississippi University for Women and East Mississippi Community College, includes information in all of his books for self-guided tours.

Parents if you need to do some grocery shopping for Thanksgiving, drop your children off at the library, Tuesday, November 24^th at 2 o’clock. The Friends of the Library will be hosting a movie matinee the feature movie is UP. The movie will be shown on the big screen in the meeting room. Don’t forget to bring a pillow or blanket to sit back and relax! Wednesday, November 25^th at 10 o’clock Pocahontas will be shown to give you one last chance for those last minute errands. Snacks will be served both days.

Sunday, November 22^nd the Library will be taking part in the Open House Festivities of Pontotoc. Santa Claus will be visiting the library from 1:00 – 3:30. Everyone is invited to stop by and visit with Santa, don’t forget to bring your list. We will make pictures or you are welcome to bring your own camera. Also, out of the Mississippi Alluvial plain come a true Delta Daughter and Son with a whimsical sense of wonder and southern heritage to share their first children’s storybook, Charlie the Peanut.
Charlie the Peanut features all fields and types of crops in the Mississippi Delta. The authors’ Great Dane Charlie, who is six years old, is the inspiration for the name of their character. The book is a combination of Alyssa’s experience working with children for 6 years and a dream Keath had in the middle of peanut planting season. The story is their lives together. They both agree that it is so important to focus on the positive and simple things in life, to live and grow in the moment, and to not focus on the past or worry about the future. A close family friend commented about the couple saying, “One tills the soil and one tends to souls. I wish their life a beautiful garden”.

Keath and Alyssa live in Horseshoe, MS. They are married and live on a plantation. Keath grew up on a farm and has been a delta planter all his adult life. He raises cotton, soybeans, rice, peanuts, wheat, cotton and sunflowers.

Alyssa is a mental health therapist and has seen first hand how children, at times, feel that if they were somewhere else with someone else that they would be happier.

The idea for this children's book is a mixture of Alyssa's experience working as a counselor with children and from a dream that Keath had in the middle of peanut planting season.

Charlie is the Killebrew's Great Dane whom the character of the book is named after.

The Killebrew’s will be signing copies of their book. Open house @ your library is being sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Hasbro donated 3 new card games to our library and to every public library in the United States. These games include MONOPOLY DEAL, SCRABBLE SLAM and PICTUREKA! Hasbro says that games and our public libraries provide great value for America’s families. Both games and libraries bring people together, help us to learn and grow; educate us and make us laugh. To enjoy these new games come to the library on the second Tuesday of the month from 4:00 – 6:00 for “Friendly Competition”. This is a great Family Game Afternoon/Night.

The library will be closing Wednesday, November 25^th at Noon and will be closed through November 28^th. The library will reopen Monday, November 30^th.

It should be no surprise to you that the economic downturn is having a significant impact on the Library's budget. So far, we are managing with cuts in the area of books, materials, and supplies. We ask for your understanding if we cannot supply the new best seller that you want.

We will continue to provide the best service that we can afford.

Former State Representative, newspaper editor-publisher and political consultant Bill Miles will be discussing his recently published memoir, Scribe Among Pharisees at Lunching with Books Tuesday, November 10^th at the Pontotoc County Library, beginning at noon, which is sponsored by the Pontotoc Woman’s Club. Before the program, Mr. Gerald Waldrop from the Pontotoc Music Study Club will be playing the piano for everyone's enjoyment.

The book is a collection of first-hand stories and memories of by-gone days. Miles chronicles more than a half century of Mississippi politics and southern life. Scribe Among Pharisees documents the good and the bad about Mississippi as seen through this newspaperman-educator-public relations/advertising executive turned politician.

Former Mississippi Governor William F. Winter who wrote the Foreword said: “Writing out of his own personal knowledge, Bill Miles is able to frame events in a way that makes us feel a part of the story - as we identify with various unforgettable characters this book brings to life. Reading this book is like unlocking a vault where heretofore unknown tales are stored.”

Bobby Harrison, Capitol Bureau Chief for the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal, said: “As a journalist-private businessman and politician, Bill Miles has seen history made in Mississippi and in some instances helped make it. He compellingly puts his journalistic instincts to work in Scribe Among Pharisees whether talking about farm life and a three-legged cat in Itawamba County, covering crime in Northeast Mississippi and the integration of the University of Mississippi, consulting for some of the state’s most powerful politicians or serving in the Mississippi Legislature. Bill has an easy, enjoyable writing style that makes his recollections even the more memorable.”

Bill Miles grew up on a farm in Itawamba County as the youngest of five children. He attended Itawamba Junior College (now Itawamba Community College) and received his B.A. with a major in journalism from the University of Mississippi. He has worked for various newspapers including The Birmingham, AL News, the Memphis Commercial Appeal, the Memphis Press Scimitar and the Daily News (Jackson, MS). Later, he formed the magazine Mid-South Publications, Inc. and was instrumental in creating Bristow-Miles Associates, Inc., the region’s first advertising and public relations firm. In 1996, Miles was elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives for District 21 where he served for the next twelve years.

Mr. and Mrs. Carl Young donated a book to the library in memory of Mrs. Ruby Austin.

The Library will be closed November 11^th in observance of Veterans Day.

The Library has specified use of 7 computers to enhance our community: 4 are for adults pursuing their education, 2 are for job research and resumes, and 1 is for e-government.

Terry Swindol, officer and longtime member of the NEMSH&G Society, will present a seminar on "The Stateline Mob" in the Lagniappe @ your library: History series at Pontotoc County Library on November 17th at 7 o’clock.

A videographer and film historian, Swindol has recorded about 50 oral history videos for the Society.

Swindol is a lifelong resident of north Mississippi. He earned degrees in music education from Mississippi State University in 1970 and 1984. He was a band director between 1970 to 1995; teaching first at Lawhon Junior High School and later at Shannon High School. Although retired, he continues to teach music part time at Shannon High School and substitute teaches at Tupelo Christian Preparatory School.

He belongs to Toastmasters International, the North Mississippi Dulcimer Association, and serves on the Board of Directors for the Memphis Film Festival. He is a film historian and collector of vintage films; has worked in two movies; has interviewed several movie actors; and has worked in video production. Terry enjoys public speaking and presents programs on his historical research.

The Pontotoc Woman’s Club invites you to attend Lunching With Books at the Pontotoc County Library on Tuesday, October 13^th at noon. Bill Andrews will be the guest author and reviewer. Andrews’ latest book is a fiction novel titled Mason’s Link. Mr. Gerald Waldrop from the Pontotoc Music Study Club will provide musical entertainment immediately before the program.

Have you ever wondered what life might be like in Heaven, how people live, what they do? Have you ever thought about the actual process of entering Heaven or what fate awaits those not allowed in? Read a breathtaking and powerful story about Heaven in Mason's Link. Mason's Link is a novel about the discovery by one man, George Mason, of a Link which can be used to communicate with a departed loved one; a discovery considered by the Powers in Heaven to be the most important event in Christendom since the Resurrection. Follow George as he tests the Link, then, as he struggles with a love triangle involving his deceased first wife, Katherine, and his current wife, Dana, as they all migrate to Heaven. Read how George faces an unexpected fate and his transgressions following his own death when he is tested for worthiness to enter Heaven. Bill Andrews started his writing career after he retired in 2003. Prior to that time, his writing was done for the benefit of corporate executives in the various financial management roles he held throughout his 40 year career. He is a CPA, holds a BS Degree in Business and an MBA Degree, both from Mississippi State University. After a career that saw him located in Birmingham, Chicago, Little Rock, and Memphis, he finally settled back into his hometown of Columbus, Mississippi with his wife, Marilynn. They are parents to three children, all married, away from home and off the payroll. His main enjoyments are golf, genealogy, writing and grandchildren of which he and Marilynn have four - so far. Mason's Link is his second novel. His first book, The Road from Caledonia to Canisy, chronicled his Father's journey through World War II. Both of his books will be available for checkout from the library per Mr. Andrew nice donation.

A light lunch will be provided. Everyone is welcomed to attend.

Get out your best costume and come to the library Halloween morning for our costume contest. The event will begin at 10:00. After the contest a snack will be served and then “Scooby- Doo meets the Boo Brothers” will be shown on the big screen in the meeting room. Children are encouraged to bring a quilt or sleeping bag to put on the floor to lie on while watching the movie.
